What are eyelash extensions?

Eyelash extensions are semi-permanent synthetic eyelashes that are curved to replicate a natural eyelash and applied one at a time - one false lash to one natural lash. This will create a natural look adding length and fullness to the existing lashes and in some cases, a darker lash-line. Good lash extensions are thicker at the base and tapered to a fine point. Eyelash extensions should only be applied by a trained and certified professional to ensure proper, cleanly, and safe application to avoid damaging your natural eyelashes. Self-application or application by untrained individuals is discouraged.

What are eyelash extensions made out of?

Eyelash extensions are typically made out of synthetic fibers or mink hair. Synthetic eyelashes tend to last longer with normal wear whereas mink, since the hairs are softer and finer, don’t last as long. Mink hair looks the most natural but synthetic lashes come glossy (polished) or matte. The lashes come in different lengths, curl patters, and diameters. All of these factors are considered when choosing your lash style and what works best for your natural lashes.

How much do eyelash extensions cost?

Price can vary from each salon or individual who offers lash services. Some places do lash counting while others let their clients pick their price point. Prices can also vary dependent on the type of lash style – natural, classic, or 3D+ volume. Your technicians skill set will also be a determining factor.

How long do eyelash extensions take?

A full set of eyelash extensions can take 120-150 minutes to apply. A touch-up or fill, when the lashes are at least 50% in-tact, can take half the time to apply.

How long do eyelash extensions last?

A full set generally lasts four to six weeks. This is dependent on the individual’s after-care regimen. It is important that you follow the after-care instructions your lash technician has recommended.

Does it hurt?

The lash application should not be uncomfortable or painful at all. Most clients, because they are laying down with their eyes closed in a relaxed state, usually fall asleep.

Do eyelash extensions ruin your natural eyelashes?

No, eyelash extensions should not ruin your natural eyelashes as long as you keep a few things in mind:

  • No rubbing, pulling or picking your lash extensions. This can cause premature shedding of your natural eyelashes.

  • Brush your lash extensions with a clean mascara want to prevent or reduce tangling or flipped lashes.

  • Avoid daily use of mascara but if applied, only use water-soluble mascara.

  • DO NOT use water-proof mascara.

  • Avoid facial cleansers and eye makeup removers that contain solvent-like ingredients such as glycols and carbonates as they can reduce the wear time of your new lashes.

  • Cleanse lashes of makeup and debris daily. You may try this do-it-yourself lash shampoo recipe - ¼ part baby shampoo, ¾ part water, and a few drops of pure essential tea tree oil.

Can you wear mascara?

Avoid daily use of mascara but if applied, only use water-soluble mascara. Apply only at the tips. DO NOT use waterproof mascara.

Can you use an eyelash curler on your extensions?

No. The eyelash curler will snap your natural lash with the extensions and kink the extensions. It is not necessary to curl them because the lashes already have a curl to them.

What is the best way to remove makeup with lash extensions?

Avoid going through the lash extensions to remove makeup and debris. Using lint-free baby Q-tips can be used for hard-to-reach areas and fingertips are recommended. Also avoid makeup removing wipes as these can leave lint residue.

How do I take care of my lash extensions?

  • Do not wet eyelashes for the first 24 hours.

  • Do not wash eyes or eyelashes with hot water or steam the face within the first 48 hours.

  • Avoid saunas, steam rooms, jacuzzis, hot yoga, and swimming within the first 48 hours.

  • Avoid pulling, picking, and twisting lash extensions. This can cause damage to your natural lashes and may lead to premature shedding of your lashes.

  • Use a bare mascara wand to brush your extensions every morning and night to reduce tangling and flipping extensions.

  • Avoid daily use of mascara but if applied, only use water-soluble mascara.

  • DO NOT use water-proof mascara.

  • Curling of lash extensions is not recommended as it may shorten the lifespan of the extensions.

  • Avoid facial cleansers and eye makeup removers that contain solvent-like ingredients such as glycols and carbonates as they can reduce the wear time of your new lashes.

  • Cleanse lashes of makeup and debris daily. Use recommended lash products!
